The Sky Was Always There
That month,
I remember opening the mailbox again and again —
only to pull out more bills.
The dentist.
The mechanic.
Insurance.
Doctor.
Paper after paper reminding me that life,
the horizontal kind,
requires constant attention.
So I worked harder.
More hours.
More control.
Maybe because I feared the space between thoughts —
